Chalk River Laboratories is a licensed nuclear installation operated by CNL under contract with AECL. This site is approximately 3,700 hectares in area, divided into a Main Campus Area and an Outer Area. The Main Campus Area is divided into a Protected Area, where radiological work takes place and a Supervised Area where radiological and non-radiological work takes place.

There are approximately 150 buildings on-site, most located in the Main Campus Area. A population of over 3, 200 employees and contractors are engaged in activities such as scientific research and nuclear waste management, construction, maintenance and administration.

CNL commissioned a study to develop options to create an open campus experience, increasing the efficiency of pedestrian traffic to promote a synergistic and collaborative research environment.
