Regulatory study to the inform the Government of Saskatchewan’s deliberation on their SMR Regulation
The federal government, through the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), regulates the use of all nuclear energy and materials in Canada. In Saskatchewan, the provincial government and the CNSC share regulatory oversight of uranium mining and milling activities in the province. This collaborative relationship is further detailed in Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) between the Province of Saskatchewan and the CNSC. A similar relationship is expected for SMR projects in Saskatchewan.
As Saskatchewan continues to explore the enabling conditions for development and deployment of Small Modular Reactors, the province must consider future regulatory requirements specific to nuclear power generation. To begin this process, the Saskatchewan Government commissioned a study reviewing existing Uranium Mine and Mill regulations against the requirements for Nuclear Power Plant regulation at the provincial level.
